If that's the objective, Freescale has put out a low-cost development 
kit called Symphony Soundbite (watch the linewrap):

If you're not quite wanting to start more or less from scratch you 
could try to get a SoundArt Chameleon used.  You can find the remains 
of the SoundArt website and some projects for it (some even GPL'ed)
